While I have issues with the renaming, I would like to thank the new owners for putting a huge investment into the Fort Henry Mall, to update and improve the aesthetics and layout. I also understand they found it necessary to change the name in order to draw new tenants. One ingredient missing that could put the mall on the map and make the new “Kingsport Town Center” live up to its name, would be to surround the area with condo’s or apartments and several ammenities within the property of the massive parking lots.. Making the site into a small town would transform the area, increase much needed residential (the building of lofts in downtown can’t keep up with the demand), increase foot traffic, create a captive audience, increase sales, etc… the list goes on. This same approach is being utilized all over the country with great success. For one of many examples, click www.worldchanging.com How many more people would be willing to walk over to the food court for lunch or dinner, or breakfast for that manner, or drop in for a movie at Marquee Cinemas, have a drink, then walk back to their condo? I’d say a lot, if you’ve read about the the recent statistics on baby boomers and echo boomers.
To encourage the owners of the Fort Henry Mall to add condo’s or lofts on the campus of the mall, contact them at www.forthenrymall.com

Most may not remember that this building was mainly covered in blue aluminum siding, and had 2 wooden arches in the entrance. I’ll try and wrangle up a before picture. Urban Synergy has worked tirelessly to help transform Downtown Kingsport, one building at a time. Actually, it’s sometimes 2 or 3 at a time. Market Street Lofts on 116 East Market Street are now fully occupied with 4 beautiful lofts upstairs and the Gamers League and the Centre Ville Salon and Spa on the ground floor. This building is worth a visit just to see how beautifully the building has been renovated. An interesting note is that the stone under the windows of the retail space was salvaged from the demolition of the original Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City.

Across the street they have begun construction on another project, with an aim to renovate the facade, and make the inside available for buildout.

River Mountain Antiques and Primitives opened Aug. 1 at 334 Commerce St., in Downtown Kingsport. The business offers a variety of antiques and rustic primitives. Right now there is a 10% discount off Fall wreaths.
“Rock tables and benches handcrafted from slabs of siltstone framed in cedar, sourwood, and locust provide a woodsy cabin cozy feel. Ducks, swans, and other wood carvings add to the shop’s rustic uniqueness,” according to the release.
The materials for many of these primitives were salvaged from downed trees on River Mountain in Christians Bend and an 1800s log cabin in Hawkins County. The shop also offers a selection of antiques from various periods and styles, as well as locally made jewelry and artwork.
The business is open from 10 am to 5:30 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. The store is close Sunday and Monday. For more information, call (423) 247-8663
