Kingsport Ballet in Downtown Kingsport for 25 years!
Posted by DownTown Kingsport Square on September 25, 2008
Here is a recent history and update from Bertina Dew, Executive Director of the Kingsport Ballet.
“We have been a downtown business for 25 years (we are celebrating the company’s 20th anniversary this year, and the school’s 25th in 09). We had a ballet studio Downtown way before it was cool to be downtown! We started out on Main Street in the 80’s and have been on Broad since 2000, following a capital campaign to renovate the facility we are in now. We turned a run-down third floor with torn tin ceiling tiles hanging like vines, into a bright studio space with exposed beams and mini-theatre. We sublet additional space to music instructors who provide lessons in every band/orchestra instrument – all on the third floor at 220 Broad.
We bring in renowned international artists into our locale several times per year, and we have a substantial presence in the southeast within the dance community. We are substantially funded by the Tennessee Arts Commission for general operating support, and we have had an artist in residence from Russia since April of 07. Our artistic director has just won an individual artist fellowship with the TAC for choreography.
We embody, and add dimension to, the arts-rich environment we want to make known.”
